Evening Roundup

As Veterans Day draws to a close, we've got a group of links with some of the latest news and analysis:

  • Here's another excellent and concise YouTube explanation for what the writers are asking for. It's called Fade to Black.
  • Commentary from reviewer Barbara Barnett, who had been linking to Amazon Unbox episodes of "House" as part of her reviews.
  • An excellent visual breakdown of what media is owned by the 10 major conglomerates.
Remember, tomorrow's pickets begin at 6am!

Damon Lindelof's Op-Ed in the Times was so good it made me cry. I guess I should start sitting shiva for my beloved television. My heart hurts.

Let's also begin to get out the word about all the Disney child labor/exploitation issues that have been in the press in the last week. Maybe if people see that Disney is prepared to exploit innocent children to make a buck, they can begin to imagine the kind of company the "happiest place on earth" actually is.

Oh God. 6AM? I'd rather work for free!

Wow. This is very interesting. Good luck to all writers picketing tomorrow. I understand tomorrow is "Take Your Child to Non-Work Day."

Hope it goes well.

Seems the unitedhollywood domain is screwed up, at least for me.

A couple of questions:

1. Are people picketing on weekends or only weekdays?

2. How soon after Thanksgiving will picketing begin again?

I was thinking of driving to LA over Thanksgiving weekend to join the picket lines. But if I did, I would be there on Saturday.... If there is no picketing on weekends, and if picketing won't be starting up again that soon after Thanksgiving, obviously there would be no reason to make the trip...

Thanks for your help!

Nope, no picketing on weekends. The rule of thumb is that, if the studios are closed, we're not picketing. So it's only workdays.

Can you guys please publish a list of the six companies we're dealing with, their CEOs and the compensation they took home last year? Also a list of addresses, both e-mail and snail mail would be extremely helpful!

I happened upon your blog and really want you to know I support your strike. I am not a member of show business, just a person who loves my TV shows and good movies. Are the regular folks like me allowed to sign the petition or is it just for actors, writers, etc? Anyway, good, informative blog and good luck with the strike...I'm one cheering you all on!!fjkekij

Listening to Howard Stern... He has given a good amount of time to the strike this morning and is interviewing Brian Koppelman.

6am-that's a normal hour for us below-the line crew that are being screwed by this strike! Thanks WGA!

Anonymous said...

It's not the WGA that's screwing you.. it's the networks.

Damon,

Great op-ed and I completely agree with everything you said, especially the part about what we all might do if we have to wait another year for "Lost". J/K, but seriously ... I want my "Lost" back!

The visual breakdown is 6 years out of date - Disney no longer owns a town, for starters.

Otherwise, keep up the great work!

Another writer's story. Finally managed to work his way up to get his very first episode written and then the strike hits: http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/entertainment/columnists.nsf/gailpennington/story/C6E79466095E92D68625738E007EB2C8?OpenDocument

The conglomerate list is out of date - completely missed the huge amount of internet real estate that Fox owns (including MySpace). And since "new media" is a bit of an issue here, that was a pretty big oversight.

Keep strong!

As you voice your opinion regarding the WGA's decision to strike, consider the labor practices in many other countries. My mother-in-law is from South America. She is over the age of 40 and is therefore considered too old to employ by most of the employers' standards. Age and gender discrimination is accepted as the norm there. Because she speaks English fluently, she recently interviewed for online data entry job with a U.S. company that offered to pay her a whopping $212 U.S. dollars (USD) a month, working full-time. That's not even close to our minimum wage. Be thankful we live in a country where we can stand up for our rights. When you witness firsthand the living conditions of those without the liberties we take for granted here, you learn to better appreciate what you have and are more willing to fight for those rights.

Damon Lindelof made me cry, too.

The Big Ten article is outdated.
http://www.thenation.com/special/bigten.html
The website states "Current as of Dec 20, 2001.
Is their a site with an updated version of the big media conglomerates?
