WGA Holiday Harvest Food Drive

(Volunteers will be collecting food from the picket lines tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday.)

Food banks across the country are facing the worst shortages in 30 years. Due to shortages in government surpluses and other federal cutbacks, food supplies are down as much as 50 percent this year. Meanwhile, food banks are seeing gigantic increases in need this year, with demand up as much as 40 percent.

SOVA, a local food bank serving 4,500 poor and homeless families a month, desperately needs these staples:

· Powdered milk

· Canned tuna

· Peanut butter

Please bring these to the collection table at the picket lines Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. If we can collect 5,000 of each, we’ll stock SOVA with enough staples to last for the rest of December.

Okay, obesity is a major problem. So why non profit orgs would ask for something as rich and dangerous for a kid as peanut butter ?
Rice, pasta are not perishable either and they're much better for health than peanut butter.
Plus you can get canned salad fruits that can be good for a very long time.

Anyway, I applaud the initiative, not the goods asked for though.

This is awesome. And, regarding peanut butter, it's one of the standards given to the homeless because it's a portable protein and doesn't require refrigeration.

For those of us who can't get to the lines this week to donate goods, is there a link where we can donate funds to SOVA on behalf of the WGA?

Peanut butter requires no refrigeration and no cooking), not even a can opener. Peanut butter is dirt cheap and packs a lot of calories and protien in a small amount (unlike, say, fruit).

It's pretty presumptuous of you to assume you know how to run a food bank better than the people who, you know, do it for a living.
