UPDATE: End of Day Negotiations Update

The WGA Negotiating Committee, on behalf of the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE), today issued the following statement regarding Contract 2007 negotiations:

“The Writers Guilds met today with the AMPTP and discussed issues of jurisdiction for original content for the Internet, Reality TV, Animation, and Basic Cable. The talks also were focused on contract enforcement. For the last two days, we have had substantive discussions of the issues important to writers, the first time this has occurred in this negotiation. However, we are still waiting for the AMPTP to respond to all of our proposals, including Internet streaming of theatrical and television product and digital downloads. Bargaining resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m.”

Bit by bit, one step at a time. It's progress, and I like it. Meanwhile, we should be planning alternate, more extreme tactics in case these guys pull out last minute. For now, let's see how things keep coming.

I don't want to be a downer, but unfortunately, the AMPTP has the directive to really drag this thing out. The WGA wanting jurisdiction over Reality TV writers is a point that will be battled over for a LONG time, let alone the other issues that are being haggled over right now.

The AMPTP will not offer up the second half of their N.E.P. proposal until everything they are currently discussing get dealt with.

Bargaining will not go on for many more days, as the AMPTP will break for the holidays, so we're looking at two/three weeks of non-negotiating... If the WGA and AMPTP say that the past two days have been "positive", then we will be striking for a long, long time.

The AMPTP has hired big guns in the PR world to spin what will be little/no movement.

My feet aren't tired from picketing, but know that I'm picketing with a realistic, not-so-hopeful mindset - and I suggest everyone else does the same, because truthfully, it makes the picketing go by faster. See you all at the picket lines and rallies.
