CA Democratic Party Supports Strike

The California Democratic Party is officially on record as supporting the WGA's strike action. Stating in their resolution:

WHEREAS, the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has refused to recognize the legitimate claims of the approximately 12,000 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) to fair remuneration through residuals on the distribution of its members’ creative endeavors on any current distribution platforms and those yet to be developed, including the monitoring and enforcement thereof; and

WHEREAS, the AMPTP has had sufficient experience in new media to make confident, public revenue projections to its shareholders, but nevertheless insists that it must study new media for another three years before it can bargain a residuals formula; and

WHEREAS, the AMPTP has thus far been unwilling to recognize that the wages, working conditions and residuals provided in the basic WGA contract should govern work created for any platform, new or old; and has thus far been unwilling to bargain in good faith with the WGA; and is unwilling to offer a reasonable compensation proposal on new media, the home video market formula, DVD sales, mobile phone and iPod transmissions; nor to counteroffer WGA payment proposals for Internet streaming and instead calls such use “promotional” even when whole pictures are shown and new revenue is generated;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the California Democratic Party fully supports the strike action and the fight for a fair agreement by the Writers Guild of America as a job action necessary to furthering resolution of the issues between it and its signatory employers, and encourages the AMPTP to return to the table and engage in good faith bargaining; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution should be transmitted to the WGA, the AMPTP, the media, and interested parties.

I'm shocked! Not. Somehow this will be used for votes in the next election..."And I also support the writers strike...and I don't know what else to say because my writer is still on strike...oh, and vote for me."

It's not as impressive, but I also support the strike. It's been rough for me (no conan OR daily show?!), but I'd rather suffer than see the WGA give in to this nonsense, awful deal!

First anonymous commenter: I'm not sure exactly what your point is. You seem to be a) scornful of politicians making a statement on an issue that effects their constituents (which is, uh, something they do all the time. And yes, their statements are often used in political campaigns. More often, they're ignored.) b) suggesting that the writers have somehow scripted this statement, which is a little...odd. Last I checked the California Democratic Party is not a guild signatory.

Perhaps you're just concerned about the release of this statement to media outlets, (which by the way, I believe are mostly owned by members of the AMPTP, so it probably won't hit the airwaves anyway), or you just object to politician getting involved in silly things like labor disputes...

Can you clarify your position? Or is that just impossible?

In support of writers and the WGA, I am boycotting movies, TV, DVDs and internet video. I cancelled Blockbuster, told them it is in support of the WGA. I don't have a TV now and no plan to buy one soon. No more internet entertainment. I won't buy any DVDs for Christmas this year, or send movie theater gift certificates like I did last year.

I am sending the $$ directly to the writers who have written the movies and TV shows that have made a difference in my life. You can, too -- checks payable to those writers, in envelopes addressed to those writers c/o the WGA.

Writers are the foundation of every movie and TV show we've ever gotten anything out of. They've been disrespected forever. It's time to show respect. It's time to compensate them fairly.

Visual storytelling is how we practice facing fear and conflict. It's how we remember how to laugh in the face of tragedy.
